Villafranca de Bierzo on runsaan 3000 asukkaan pieni kaupunki laaksossa suurten vihreitten vuorten suojelemana. Entisinä aikoina suojelemiseen tarvittiin paljon muutakin. Tarvittiin suuri linnoitus (Los Marquesin linna), jota aloitettiin rakentaa vuonna 1490. Linnan tornit ovat menneiden vuosien sotien tuhoamat mutta linnan ulkomuurit ovat edelleen hyvin nähtävinä. Linna on merkitty maailman merkittävien kulttuurihistoriallisten nähtävyyksien joukkoon kuten vieressä sijaitseva San Franciscon kirkkokin.
Seven years ago I spent the last day of April here. In Finland that day is a party day for everybody, specially for students and workers. My memories tell that it was cold and wet - not at all party time. Today we had cold when leaving Ponferrada in the Morning only about 7-8 degrees Celsius. But after an hour walk sun is rising and a walker does not see his breath anymore. This etapa of 24 kilometers to Villafranca de Bierzo is easy. Many villages with their cafes give a lot reasons for breaks.
Villafranca de Bierzo is a little town with about 3000-4000 inhabitants in a valley protected by big green mountains all around. In ancient times people needed also a big castle (Los Marqueses Castle-Palace) to protect them and the nation. Towers of the castle have been demolished by wars laterly but otherwise the castle is well preserved. This castle has been declared Assets of Cultural Interests of the world as well the Church of San Francisco by the castle. This church is built in 13th century. One of the remarkable places in Villafranca de Bierzo is also the Church of Santiago from 12th century. The authentic treasure of that church is the Door of Perdon situated on the side facade facing north. It is called Door of Pardon because unabled pilgrims who could not complete their pilgrimage to Santiago (about 180 kilometers further) could be granted here without reaching Santiago de Compostela.
When you meet a very nice and pleasant service experience, you have all the reasons to tell about it. Today in Villafranca de Bierzo I really experienced that kind of excellent service. In the center of Villafranca de Bierzo the Gallego family runs a private alberga Leo in a beautifully rustic style restored house in old part of the city. A sweating pilgrim, who is walking in that alberga is welcomed like an old friend. - Welcome, sit here, have a drink first, is the friendly comment of Maria, the daughter of the family Gallego. And after a relaxing moment, when a pilgrim has finished her/his beer or other drink it is time to see the house. Little, cosy rooms, modern, light and clean rooms for showers and toilets, in a minute Mercedes, mother of the family throws hikers wet clothes in a laundry machine and after that to dryer, diginorts have their efficient WiFi available and downstairs is a cosy bar run by Pepe, the father of the family with Peter, a nice Irishman, who was stuck to this albega some months ago during his Camino. Also Angela, another daughter of the family is committed to this business. The Gallego family serves this whole friendly package for a pilgrim with 10 euros / night. Alberga Leon does not have a restaurant. But if you walk a hundred meters to Plaza Mayor, you get your meals for sure. The whole atmosphere in alberga Leo is friendly and cosy. I really was impressed. If you are doing Camino Francais and you need a place to sleep in Villafranca de Bierzo, Alberga Leo is an excellent choice. I can recommend.
